The Family, Child and Birth Parent records all have a Case which tracks their interaction with your program from Inquiry/Referral to the closure of the case. Within each case, there are several stages, some of which are processes within themselves, like the home study and adoption.
The Adoption table connects the triad.
Family, Birth Parent and Child fields on the adoption table are shared between each record, so an entry into one on this table will be reflected in the other linked record's files.
Think of the adoption record as starting an adoption plan.
A new adoption record in SAM will be needed for each adoption plan, should a commitment cancellation, dissolution or disruption occur and for each child being adopted. The family, child and birth parent can each have multiple adoption records to account for changes once a commitment to pursue adoption is made.
A few example scenarios for clarification:
Example 1:
Should a birth family decide to parent a child, the adoption record can be canceled or disrupted. The family may match with another birth parent or child and start a new adoption record.
Example 2:
A birth mother places multiple children for adoption, either with a sibling group or a new adoption, her record will have multiple adoption records.
Example 3:
If a disruption or dissolution occurs between an Adoptive Family and Child, the Child may have another adoption record created when another family is located.
